3 Reasons Why You Don’t Get Good Lip Coverage

Professional PMU tips from iColor Academy
~
Intro

Smooth and even lip coverage is one of the most difficult tasks in PMU. Even experienced artists sometimes struggle with:
– pigment not taking into the skin
– patchy spots
– irritated skin
– fast swelling
In this letter, we’ll break down the 3 main reasons why pigment doesn’t stay — and how to fix them.

1
Reason 1 — Too Much Wiping

Excessive wiping removes pigment before it has time to settle and also irritates the skin.

Why this happens:
• wiping after every line
• pads too wet
• rubbing movements
• checking the skin too often

How to fix it:
✔ Wipe once every 2–3 passes
✔ Use lint-free pads or iColor Mousse
✔ Dab gently instead of rubbing
✔ Avoid circular movements

After the first pass, apply iColor Fix over the secondary anesthesia and, without covering with film, leave for a few minutes. Fix soothes the skin well, as even noted by the clients.
iColor Mousse 3 in 1

iColor Fix — Liquid patch

2
Reason 2 — Poor Skin Fixation

Incorrect fixation prevents the needle from entering the skin at a stable angle. Instead of going inside, the pigment “skates” over the surface.

Mistakes:
• weak stretch
• pulling instead of pressing
• unstable needle angle
• only one hand used
• client moving the mouth

Correct technique:
✔ Three-point stretch
✔ Press firmly rather than pulling
✔ Keep the angle stable
✔ Work in small zones
✔ Ask the client to relax their lips

3
Reason 3 — Incorrect Machine Technique

Even high-quality pigments won’t stay if the settings or movements are incorrect.

Common issues:
– speed too high
– speed too low
– unstable pressure
– painting movements
– trying to saturate in one heavy pass

How to fix it:
✔ Work on low–medium speed
✔ Build color gradually
✔ Use correct needle type (1RL / 3RL)
✔ Avoid overworking
✔ Maintain consistent movement
Bonus: Early signs you need to adjust your technique
❌ pigment rolling on the surface
❌ swelling after 10–15 minutes
❌ uneven redness
❌ pigment escaping the needle tip

If you see these signs — adjust stretch, speed or wiping amount.
